                            Beast of the Week

                            Picture
Each week the person who does something amazing, sweet, sick, crazy or just plain insane within one of the club's activities will be named the Beast of the Week!

Tim Dougherty and Charlie Smalling - February 13th 2012
This particular week, we have two individuals who behaved quite BEASTly in the space of a mere 24 hours.  First, at the PSU Meet, Tim Dougherty posted a 4:38 mile which is his PR.  In addition to running an incredible time, Tim set up and organized this meet which was a logistical challenge.  Tim, who is also the GRC's IM Basketball Coach, has been striving to broaden BOMF to the entire University community and has gained a lot of attention.  Tim was quite the BEAST, but on Sunday morning, more BEASTly activities were taking place.  At 9:00 am, while most students were still slumbering, Charlie Smalling and two other GRC marathoners took to the streets in a massive 20 mile run.  What made the run even more amazing was that Charlie did not go to bed until 3:00 am that morning welcoming new hires to The Corp. These incredible displays of tenacity and drive are the essence of BEAST and deserve major congratulations.

                            Tim Dougherty - November 30th 2011
Along with his responsibilities as our vice-president and co-captain of the boy's team, Tim has taken on sole planning of our BOMF runs for the past two semesters.  His leadership has made BOMF an integral part of our team and an important service project for the GRC.  Although the mornings are early, Tim is always able to parallel park our twelve passenger van and keep our spirits up now that the weather is cold.  Tim is also the coach of our elite intramural basketball team.

                            Nicole Balhorn  - November 17th 2011
Nicole fell during the start of the girls 6k at NIRCA Nationals.  While she was trampled, bloodied, and beaten, her spirit was not broken.  Fighting through the onslaught, she picked herself up and finished her race. If this isn't the attitude of a BEAST, I don't know what is!  Nicole is also our girls co-captain.  Great job Nicole!

                            Lauren Hoepper
Running a PR is always a great feeling, but when you do it by 1 minute and 47 seconds, that is something amazing. In Indiana this past weekend Lauren Hoepper did just that as she helped the Hoyas capture 8th place at NIRCA Nationals. Way to finish the season strong, Lauren.

                            Hannah Hill
On Halloween, a few runners from the club ran in the Marine Corps Marathon. Major respect to all those who completed the 26.2, but we want to recognize Hannah Hill for her effort this past weekend. Hannah competed against over 20,000 other runners and placed in the top 5%, including a 5th place finish in her age group. With a time of 3:33:41, Hannah qualified for the Boston Marathon as she averaged just over 8:00 minutes per mile. So much training goes into running a good marathon. Managing classes, papers and tests is hard enough, but Hannah somehow did it all and ran a great time on Sunday. Nicely done, Hannah. Solid 26.2.

                            Beno Picciano - October 26th, 2011
We finally have our first freshman beast, and it's about time. So many guys and gals have stepped it up a notch as the year has progressed, but this week we acknowledge the heroics of Beno Picciano. Beno is a true workhorse. Anything can be thrown at the guy and he can handle it. Take this weekend. Beno, not being able to grab all of his racing gear (because a few freshmen thought it would be cool to synthesis some DMT), made it on time to the front gates, ready to go for our only D3 meet of the season. Thanks for your hard-work and consistency. Beno, you are a beast.

                            Nicole Balhorn - October 11th, 2011
This weeks beast recently placed third overall at the JMU Invitational. Please welcome our newest beast, Nicole Balhorn. What makes Nicole's third place finish more impressive is the fact that this was Nicole's second race ever. It's hard enough to find that rhythm when you've raced many times before. To do what Nicole did with only one other attempt is amazing. Major respect, Nicole. Way to beast!

                            Carrie Fahey - October 5th, 2010
This week's beast is Carrie Fahey.  Running great workouts is one thing, but beasting the competition takes the cake. This past weekend Carrie placed fourth overall in the women's 6k race at UVA with a time of 25:02. Averaging 6:43 per mile, Carrie led the Hoyas to a second place finish as a team. Way to beast the first race, Carrie!

                            Derrik Sweeney - September 27th, 2010
No one's got more spirit, energy or style than this weeks beast. Give him any workout and he'll handle it. Have a race at 9:00am on a Saturday, and he'll roll out of bed -- with only a few hours of sleep -- and beast it. He's just a hard-nosed runner who goes to work and does his thing. Our beast definitely has a flair all his own. No one rocks gold kicks like Derrik Sweeney. Nice job DSween, keep delivering the sunshine.

                            Jordan Megna - September 14th, 2010
Our first Beast of the Week this year is none other than Jordan Megna. You may know Jordan as the Club Vice President, but what separates him this week was his work on the 185 for Heroes Ceremony. He not only beasted planning the ceremony, but he also made it a huge success. Not to mention he assembled the entire program -- from the food, to the speakers to the set-up -- in roughly a month. In addition, Jordan has come into the season with an incredible fitness level. If planning the 185 Ceremony wasn't enough, he ran 70 miles per week over the summer! That right there, is Beast.

                            Ben Bordoley - April 26th, 2010
The Beast of the Week this week is a man who will be participating in the insane Warrior Dash this October. He is a man who wears the vibram five-fingers; a man who plays ultimate; and on Saturday a man who ran the 4x320m, 200m, 400m and 1600m all in the span of an hour and a half. Major respect to this week's beast. Cheers to Ben Bordoley.

                            Brad Becken - April 19th, 2010

We'd like to also take the time to highlight one of the club's most essential members, Brad Becken, for his incredible contributions to the club this past weekend. Not only was he the only driver for the meet at JMU on Saturday, where he ran two races; not only did he run the Cherry Blossom 10-miler the next day; but he also still managed to show up to the 4:30pm run on Sunday afternoon. Thanks, Brad!
