FAQs
Is it really competitive?
Only if you want it to be. We have runners of all levels, including people who are just starting their running careers and those who just run to stay in shape as well as some more competitive runners. There is no pressure to be competitive, however.
When are the runs? Are there mandatory practices?
We run on Sundays, Tuesdays, & Fridays at 4:30pm, but none of these practices are mandatory. Don’t limit yourself, though: running outside of the club with other club members on non-practice days is a goal of ours, too! More information is available on our Practice page.
Will I get lost if I come on a run?
No! Again, we have runners of all levels in our club, and there are always a bunch of people to run with. If you're new to running in DC, there will be plenty of people with you who are seasoned veterans. Also, many of the routes we run are out-and-backs, so if you need to turn around earlier (or later) than the group, it's easy to follow the same route back to campus.
How far and fast do you run?
One of the best features of our club is its flexibility. How far and fast you go is entirely up to you! On a normal day, people will go anywhere from 2 or 3 up to 10 miles or more. We offer various groups for all paces, so don't worry about how slow (or fast!) you are: you will have other people to run with.
Do you ever compete?
Yes! Check out our Schedule & Results page for more detailed information on races.
Is the club exclusive, i.e., will I have trouble making friends in the club?
Absolutely not. As runners, we are very social beings, and part of our enjoyment comes from the socializing and networking that takes place on our runs. We are very welcoming to all new members—the more the merrier!
So, how do I join?
At the beginning of the year, we will be tabling at SAC Fair and will have an initial, all-club meeting where we will disseminate information for the upcoming year. Otherwise, simply showing up for some runs is the easiest way to join our club. If you would like to get reduced race fees as well as other benefits, we ask that you pay $25 in dues (see below for more information on dues). Finally, if you're unable to come to the SAC Fair or initial meeting, directions for joining the listserv are found at our Contact Us page.
What do my dues go towards?
The $25 dues will go towards race entry fees, cab fares (for DC meets), and car rentals (for non-DC meets). Also, as a GURC member, you will get 10% off at the Georgetown Running Company, located on 34th & M.
